Statement of Purpose Reflection
Operating at the cutting edge of 21st Century policing best practices is critical for law enforcement leaders. Learning, understanding, and practicing 21st Century policing best practices in policing will help to build relationships within our community and which will, in turn, build police legitimacy. Learning various skills such as Budget and Finance for Law Enforcement will aid law enforcement professionals to ensure public money is allocated properly. Knowledge of conflict resolution and decision-making will provide both officers and supervisors with skills that will allow them to successfully navigate through conflict within the department and while interacting with the public. Lastly, identifying unexpected challenges in law enforcement, including health and safety challenges, and providing recommendations on best practices to minimize the risk of illness or injuries in our communities is an essential and paramount skill paramount of law enforcement leaders.
My first paper, Capital Expense Analysis, is a hypothetical memo addressed to the Mayor. In the memo, I conduct an assessment and analysis of a personal expense before deciding if the expense is necessary. The main crux of the memo is to show the process of assessing and analyzing a business capital expense and to show the assessment of a capital expense is similar to the replacement of a personal expense. When deciding if a capital expense should be replaced, it is critical law enforcement leaders take into account the price of the capital expense, the price of any needed repairs, and identifying both to see which will be more costly. In addition, it is important to identify where the money will come from if a replacement is needed, as well as making a long-term plan to replace the item if future replacement is needed. It is inherently important law enforcement leaders are good stewards of public monies that will be used for the purchase of capital expenses. My second paper Creative Problem Solving, is a hypothetical memo addressed to the Chief of Police. In the memo, I explain I am preparing to conduct a meeting with a group of subjects that do not agree on a highly controversial issue. I identify three conflict resolution tools I will utilize to maneuver through the meeting. The memo also explains why those three conflict resolution tools were selected and why they might prove useful to resolve conflict during the upcoming meeting. It is critical for law enforcement leaders to identify, understand, and apply conflict resolution tools when dealing with a group of subjects with dissenting views. My third paper, Proposed Correctional Policy Change, identifies some of the challenges the correctional system has faced during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. In the memo, I address the local Sheriff and provide recommendations on corrections changes to decrease the chance of disease spread within the correctional system. The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us that an invisible virus can transcend countries, borders, and it will infect and kill anyone regardless of their age, race, or gender. The Covid-19 virus also does not discriminate between infecting free or incarcerated individuals. The Covid-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for law enforcement officers. Creating policies like screening incoming inmates, screening correctional officers, and limiting access to the jail which will aid in protecting inmates, law enforcement officers, as well as the community as a whole. Law enforcement leaders must be intent on identifying health challenges and creating policies that will protect the health and safety of our communities and prevent the spread of disease. Current and future law enforcement leaders must have a good understanding of budget techniques, conflict resolution, as well as identifying health challenges and creating policies to protect the health and safety of the community. Ensuring an in-depth assessment of capital expenses is completed before spending public money, resolving conflict, as well as creating policies that will protect the health and safety of our employees and our community are our responsibilities as law enforcement leaders in the 21st Century. The more proactive we are in handling these responsibilities, the more trust we will build within our communities, and the more successful our agencies will be. |
